This Christmas, Chapel St are taking a moment to give a hat’s off to the ‘Make-A-Wish Foundation’.
You see, the other week, Bat Kid saved the day in the city of San Francisco. Or should we say ‘Gotham City’ – because for a few hours – that’s what the city became.
Miles Scott – a five-year-old leukaemia survivor – had made a wish to be Bat Man for the day. Thanks to the work of the ‘Make-A-Wish Foundation’ and 10,000 pledges from community supporters – the entire city rallied round to make it happen.
Following a live broadcast by the San Francisco Police Chief making an appeal for help, Bat Kid – with the help of a Bat Man impersonator – sprung in to action.
The mini superhero’s tasks for the day included stopping a pretend robbery, releasing a damsel in distress, rescuing the San Francisco Giants baseball team mascot from a fake bomb and traveling around in a black Lamborghini-bat-mobile for the day.
It was a mass scale project, which would not have been possible without a great number of other community superheroes. A vast team of city officials, actors, local media, family, friends and supporters, all played their part. To top it all, President Obama got in on the action – sending Bat Kid a personal message and the Mayor gave him the keys to the city.
What an exciting thing to do for one little boy.
What an imaginative way to work together.
What a powerful way to build community.
At Chapel St, we’re not quite at Bat Kid status. Yet. But we love this story. This Christmas, it seemed apt to share it with you – our very own community of superheroes.
With your support, donations, time, creativity and sheer hard work, Chapel St has some really exciting projects developing in under-resourced communities around the UK.
Taking inspiration from Bat Kid, we’re looking forward to building community in 2014 and working to make a special impact on every single person we serve.
Merry Christmas, everyone.
And thank you, Bat Kid.
