The Story So Far

Chapel St is a change agency working with local communities to create new and innovative services in education, health care and employment. We are  delighted to be developing Atherton Community School – a school that will be created with and for the families and community of Atherton.

Why a New School? Chapel St and the Community of Atherton

In 2010, community leaders invited Chapel St to help explore a new educational future for local families in the face of the announced closure of the local high school. Since then, Chapel St has had the privilege of working with hundreds of local residents, including teachers, parents and carers, local leaders and other community agencies, to develop proposals for a new school as part of the Department for Education’s ‘Free School’ programme.

Over the last year, volunteers have interviewed over 500 families in Atherton to assess the need and demand for a new school. 100% of those surveyed believed that Atherton needs a secondary school, with 97% expressing their belief that children should be able to attend a school within walking distance of their home. 89% of parents expressed dissatisfaction with the current choice of secondary education. We are convinced that the all-new Atherton Community School will provide the option and opportunities that parents and the community are looking for.

Chapel St is pleased to be developing more educational opportunities for children in Atherton. We are committed to opening doors to change, opportunity and relationship in community life and look forward to working with the community of Atherton in the creation of this new school.
